In this study the effect of additions of nano silicon carbide (SiC) particulates (0, 3, 5, 7 and 10 vol%) on mechanical properties and thermal shock behavior of alumina-mullite-zirconia composites was investigated. The sintering process was carried out in two stages, first at 1600˚ and then 1500˚C, with 2 and 5 h holding, respectively. After sintering, the resultant porosities, relative densities, crystallographic phases present, and microstructure were determined. Also, thermal shock properties as well as strength of the prepared composites were evaluated. SiC particles led to a remarkable grain size reduction and density. The maximum value of fracture strength (297 Mpa) were obtained
by using 7 vol. % nano silicon carbide. SiC improved the thermal shock resistance of alumina-mullite-zirconia composites even after 10 heating cycles (∆T=1200˚C).
