Abstract
In this study, the magnesium oxide nano catalyst was synthesized and used to identify and evaluate quality. Then biodiesel was produced by trans-esterification reaction using waste oil and rapeseed oil, with this catalyst and methanol. With repeated testing and optimization of reaction conditions, good results were obtained with calcium oxide nano powder. By using this catalyst and the catalyst to oil weight ratio of 3% and methanol to oil molar ratio of 15, an average biodiesel yield of 90% and 80% for rapeseed oil and food waste oil, respectively, was obtained. The methyl esters produced in the trans-esterification reaction, are mostly the esters of Palmitic, Linoleic, Oleic, and Stearic acids.
