Abstract

Abstract High energy ball mill was implemented to produce Al-matrix compositepowders reinforced with 2.5, 5 and 15 Vol. % silicon carbide (SiC). To clarifythe role of the nanometric SiC on grain size and morphology of the composite, the morphology and structures of prepared powders were studied using scanningelectron microscopy (SEM) and X-Ray diffraction (XRD) techniques, respectively. By increasing the amount of reinforcing materialfrom 2.5% to 15%, the time required to reach the steady state decrease from 25to less than 15 hours. In addition by increasing the reinforcing material the crystallitesize within the powder particles calculated from Williamson- Hall method reduced from 67 down to 28 nm.
