Abstract

Titanium is a highly reactive metal so that whenever it is exposed to air or other environment containing available oxygen, a thin layer of oxide is formed on the surface. Due to low corrosion resistance of this layer in environments containing Cl- ions (physiologic solutions) ، anodic oxidation of titanium is performed. In this research، anodizing of titanium is galvanostatically performed in H2SO4 and H3PO4 at 25˚C and corrosion resistance of anodized specimen in PBS (phosphate- buffered saline) has been studied. The results show that the layers formed are compact at first and then have been porous and finally reach to the steady state. These contain high porosity and XRD studies show that the composition of layers is TiO2 (anatase or rutile) and have amorphous structure. The results obtained from corrosion resistance studies show that the corrosion resistance of anodized titanium is less that the non-anodized titanium and increasing the thickness of layer decreased its corrosion rate. Also, the heat treatment of anodized titanium is not affected in the corrosion resistance.
